Shopify is a fully hosted commerce platform. Servers, security updates, PCI scope, checkout and uptime are the vendor’s problem, which is the single biggest reason merchants choose it over a self-hosted stack.
Its checkout is the strongest part of the product, and the app ecosystem covers almost any requirement — subscriptions, bundles, reviews, shipping rules, marketplaces. Themes are well built and multi-channel selling is native rather than bolted on.
The costs to watch are apps and payment processing. A store running six or seven paid apps can spend more on apps than on the platform, and using a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify’s own adds a per-transaction fee.
The trade-off
Always confirm pricing on the vendor's own pricing page before you buy — rates vary by region, billing term and current promotion.
