Ecommerce Platforms

Hosted and self-hosted platforms for selling online, from first product to serious volume.

Ecommerce platform decisions are hard to reverse. Your product data, URLs, checkout, apps and theme all sit on top of the platform you pick, so the cost of switching two years in is measured in weeks of work, not a subscription fee.

The core trade-off is hosted convenience versus self-hosted control. Hosted platforms handle infrastructure, PCI scope and updates for a monthly fee; self-hosted stacks give you complete control over data, cost structure and customisation, in exchange for owning the maintenance.

What to look at before you choose

  1. Be honest about who maintains the storeIf nobody on the team wants to run updates, backups and security patching, a hosted platform is the right answer even if it costs more per month.
  2. Model total cost, not the base planApps, themes, transaction fees, payment processing and hosting all stack. Two platforms with very different sticker prices often land close once the real setup is priced.
  3. Check your specific selling modelSubscriptions, B2B pricing tiers, digital goods, bookings and heavy variant catalogues are all areas where platform support varies enormously.
  4. Look at international requirements earlyMulti-currency, tax handling for the US, Canada, UK and EU, and local payment methods are much easier to choose for than to retrofit.

Ecommerce questions

Is a hosted platform or WordPress better for ecommerce?

Hosted platforms suit teams who want to sell rather than maintain software. WordPress with a store plugin suits teams who already run a WordPress site, want full control of the stack, and have someone to maintain it.

How much does an online store really cost to run?

Budget for the platform subscription or hosting, payment processing, a theme, and the apps that cover your specific needs. Payment processing is usually the largest ongoing line once you have real sales.

Can I move my store to another platform later?

Products, customers and orders can usually be exported and imported. Themes, apps, custom code and URL structures generally cannot, which is where the real migration cost sits.
