What HubSpot is

HubSpot is a platform CRM: the contact database sits at the centre, and marketing, sales, service, content and operations tools are sold as “hubs” that plug into it. The free CRM tier is genuinely usable on its own, which is why so many small businesses start here.

The appeal is consolidation. Forms on your website, email marketing, deal pipelines, meeting links and support tickets all write to the same record, so nobody has to reconcile three systems to answer “what has happened with this customer?”.

The trade-off is that HubSpot is priced as a platform. Costs are driven by which hubs you buy, the tier within each hub, and — for marketing — how many contacts you store. Teams that only need a sales pipeline usually find a dedicated sales CRM cheaper.

Key features

  • Free CRM with contacts, deals, tasks and email tracking
  • Marketing hub with email, landing pages, forms and automation
  • Meeting scheduling and shared inbox
  • Reporting dashboards across sales, marketing and service
  • Large app marketplace and native integrations
  • Built-in CMS and blog tooling for content-led marketing

The trade-off

Where HubSpot helps, and where it costs you

What works well

  • The free tier is unusually capable and easy to start on
  • One contact record across marketing, sales and service removes reconciliation work
  • Well-documented, with a large ecosystem of partners and integrations
  • Reporting is strong without needing a separate BI tool

What to watch

  • Costs escalate quickly once you add hubs or move past entry tiers
  • Marketing contact-based pricing punishes large, low-engagement lists
  • More platform than a sales-only team needs
  • Annual commitments and onboarding fees apply to some tiers

How it is charged
Free CRM tier, then per-hub subscriptions. Marketing tiers scale with stored marketing contacts, and several tiers carry a one-off onboarding fee — check both before budgeting.

Always confirm pricing on the vendor's own pricing page before you buy — rates vary by region, billing term and current promotion.
